I'm just realizing how long it has been since I've used this blog. It's been awhile. I've neglecting posting for many reasons. The main reason being I'm just not very good at it. I enjoy making art more than anything. I also enjoy looking at others art almost as much. I do not enjoy writing about my art. I do not enjoy writing about the process of my art.

I have a tumblr blog that I'm going to start using. I think this will be more fitting to showcase my work and it's various stages, without having to write or explain anything.

This blog will stay alive for awhile, just in case I feel like saying something...

Poor But Sexy

Poor But Sexy is not my current state of living. It is however a magazine I had the pleasure of providing some illustrations for. The publication is produced by SEED9 which consists of Creative Director Ingrid Jones and Photographer Thomas Bollmann. I was fortunate enough to get to illustrate 4 different beautifully written, Aboriginal poems in the volume. You can purchase a copy for yourself and read more about the publication right here.

Dallas ADDY Awards

I was just informed this weekend, that the Doritos Point of Sale Pallet, that I provided all the artwork for, won the Bronze prize at the Dallas Addy Awards. The work was done for The Marketing Arm with Associate Creative Director Leo Santos.

I'm finally back online. I have been for a few weeks now. I've been trying to catch up on some assignments and work so I haven't been that 'active' online. I'm slowly going to start updating my site and this blog as it's been long overdue. I have some new work to show soon, and some other stuff in the works that I'll share here as time permits.

DPI Magazine

A couple of months ago I was interviewed for DPI magazine out of Taiwan. It's a great art magazine, featuring illustrators and artists from around the world. I believe I am featured in the September issue. I haven't received my physical copies yet, but I really like the design of the pages. I always feel a little odd answering questions about myself. I tend to be the type of artist who would just like the work to speak for itself. I am always more than flattered though, at the interest in my work, it's process and my inspiration.

Doritos

At the start of July, I was fortunate to land a job doing artwork for a Doritos campaign. The job itself, was a little different than anything I had ever done up to this point. It was for a store pallet, you know, those cardboard displays that hold merchandise. In this case, bags of Doritos.

The thing that made this a little different for me was that the majority of artwork was going to be cut out and assembled on top of the pallet for a diorama effect, or like a pop-up book. The artwork had to be done to fit the proper predetermined cut proportions, and seemed very confusing at first look. Also, the deadline for a project this size, with this much artwork, was extremely short, but I managed to pull it off, with very long hours and the miracle of the computer.

The concept is an Asylum, where two discontinued popular flavors have escaped. I had to do around twelve separate pieces, that create the entire pallet.

Above is the main structure, the front of the asylum.

Below is the front gate illustration. The gate wraps around the entire pallet, Thankfully the design is repeated on front and back, the only difference is the flavor of Doritos that have escaped.

This image is for the posts of the pallet. It's a wrought iron fence pole, that is repeated 8 times, two on each side. Because I had drawn a lock on the post, I had to create a second post, without the lock, so each side would look like a gate. I also created an image for the front of each tray, to make them look like the bars on the fence.

Finally, I needed two guards chasing the bags of Doritos out of the asylum. These were done last, and under great time restraints, but they were going to be printed fairly small, so I could get away with a much looser, quick drawing. Like all contracts, as an artist you always wish for more time to flush out your ideas and artwork.

Here are some photos of the final pallet printed. I believe the campaign runs until Halloween, in a Krogers Grocery store near you.

I'll try to do another post soon, with a closer look at some of the details in the drawings.

The Hamlet Idiot

I'm moving to a Hamlet. The stresses I spoke of in the last post where those of buying a house (not pictured above). The deal is done and we move in two months. It's around 1 hour from the city (Toronto) and very close to a lot of other little towns. We have a very private forested lot, and a small river in the back. We also have a lot of work to do to the place, now and probably for a long time after. It is ours though so all the work will be more than worth it.
My studio will be in a loft barn down the road. It is the first time my work space will be separate from my living space. I can't wait.

I just realized I'm not updating things as much as I'd like. I just wrapped up a doozy of a contract, so I've been laying low for the last week or so trying to get things back in order. When I can, I'll post all about it, as it was probably one of the most unique things I've ever illustrated for.

I'm going to cancel my ADUMBRATE sketch blog. I actually forgot about it when I got busy, so I figure it's defeating it's purpose. There is no use of me keeping a daily sketch blog if I'm not going to post on it daily. I'm going to try to incorporate more of that type of thing here and try to get full use out of this blog.

I've started on a little personal project with a relation, so hopefully I'll have something cool to show in the coming weeks...

This a a piece I did yesterday for a personal project I'm working on. By personal I mean nobody has asked me to do it and most certainly nobody is paying me for it. I've had this thing in my brain now for years, and I'm finally going to try to let it out. I've been working hard in my down time, and making pretty good progress.

I'm not going to say much more about it for now. Obviously it is a graphic story, but I haven't decided what to do with it as I'm working on it. My first instinct is to pitch it to publishers, once a few chapters are done, but I have no idea how to do this and who might want it, so much research would be needed. Right now, I just want to keep on drawing.

If anyone has any advice on such matters, please, drop me a line.

Red Ring of Death, Oh well.

My Xbox 360 crapped out on me early last week. Yes after a year and a half of mostly watching HD movies on it, I finally saw the dreaded 3 Red Lights, better known as The Red Ring of Death. I did my research, like I always do, and realized that being out of the year warranty, Microsoft charges somewhere in the range of $140+ shipping and handling to fix this.

Well of course I freaked fucking out, thought that it was ridiculous, due to the number of people effected by this. So what did I do, like any good illustrator I wrote a quick comic strip about it, that would be posted in parts over at The Skullshire Girls blog.

So I did a quick drawing of part 1 and started to color it getting it ready to be posted. Then, in my state of anger, I actually went to the Xbox website to do a little more research. Then I felt like a fucking idiot.

Microsoft, because the problem is so rampant, extended the warranties 3 years from date of purchase if you receive the 3 red lights. So I called, not only are they fixing it for free, I had the shipping labels within 1/2 hour of the phonecall. The repair centre in Canada is in Toronto, so they received it the next day. Oh, they're also giving me a free year of Xbox live, so at least I'll be told to go fuck myself from some 10 year old kid.

I guess I could have changed the comic strip to how great everything worked out in the end, but who would want to read that?

New Print Available! Store update Too!

I've released a new print for sale at my store. 'God says No' is now available for purchase. The print is 18 X 24 inches, and there will only be 25 available...ever. Unfortunately I had to increase the price of my prints a little. The cost of materials and printing, not to mention shipping, has gone up everywhere, so my hand was a little forced to do this. However, the prints are now being sent in very wide (6 inches in diameter) shipping tubes, which are amazing, so there is minimal rolling. The prints also have a tracking number which is nice. The prints are big, and on beautiful paper so compared to most, they're still a pretty good bargain.

You'll also notice my store has changed a little. I re-designed it with the services of the good folks over at Big Cartel. It's a really great service and will save me a lot of time. Sure, it's a little more standard looking, but I'll be able to add things, change things and take stuff down in a matter of seconds. No more re-designing and uploading etc, cause a web designer I ain't.

Oh, I also am selling a couple of original drawings there too, from the Skullshire Girls website.

Hulk Smash!

The new Hulk movie comes out tomorrow, so in honor of such a thing I had to do a quick portrait. I've loved The Hulk ever since I was a kid, I couldn't wait to get my hands on each issue every month. I'd also sit at a table for hours, filling my sketch pads with reproductions of The Hulk and his foes, in all their incarnations. Above, by memory, is the Hulk era I loved the most, somewhere in the very early 80's....

For the record, I absolutely loved the Ang Lee movie. Still, I'm looking forward to seeing Hulk destroy things for no good reason, and saying those two lovely words...Hulk Smash!

Altpick Deck

Last Year, the good folks over at Altpick.com finally offered and alternative to the over blown source book. They call it the Altpick Deck. It's a deck of postcard sized mailers that come in a very nice and well made card case.
I was approached to advertise with the second deck and when I saw the samples of last years and heard the price, I signed up immediately.
Deck 2 is now out. I received mine the other day. There are 30 or so other Illustrators in the deck and as you can see, it is quite a nice little package.

Here is a close up of the cards. Everyone's work looks great. Reprints were also available for a low cost and were well worth the price. If all goes well, I'll more than likely sign up for deck 3.

I sometimes spend hours online just looking at art and illustration. Sometimes for inspiration, sometimes just to keep up with the times of the profession. If you've noticed to your right, I have now included links to some of my favourites on this blog. Some are friends, some are not, all are cool.

I stumbled upon this great site the other day via Illustration Mundo. It's called ArtsWhore and it's a very cool nicely laid out art and illustration portal and visual blog. I then realized the there is also a DesignerWhore, PosterWhore and a PhotographyWhore. I love all these mediums so it's nice to have one stop to look at new and well established artists in one place.

Lookybook is a cool new site that allows you to look through children's books in their entirety. You can look books up through their respected Illustrators and Authors. You can also embed the books into your website, Youtube style. This is a great idea to look books up and see some incredible illustrations, but as the site states...you can never replace a book in your hands.

Here's the Illustration mentioned in my previous post. You can now see what I meant by artwork within artwork. The previous drawing was done with the sole intent to appear as a mural on the wall of the club in this picture. Maybe it will appear again in another drawing. Who knows?

I've always thought that the world would be much sweeter if we were surrounded by paintings and sculptures, on every building, in every room on cars etc...I guess in my head it already is...

Another many months have past and of course I have neglected this blog. I've been a busy man though. I got married at the end of August. That took up most of my free time this summer. I'm just getting back into the swing of things and have been working on alot of stuff. I'm going to start using this site more, for sure this time....even if I post some crappy scribble that might just be an idea I have or a sketch of something I'm working on...maybe it will keep me motivated. The above is an illustration, for an illustration...what I mean is it is meant to be wall graffiti that is part of another picture. I'll post the illo soon, so you can see what I mean. I haven't posted in awhile. I've been super busy with different projects. One of these projects was actually taking the time to figure out how to build a proper website. Once I learned how to do it I had to build it. It was time consuming but it's done and online finally. I'll probably add to it and change it a bit eventually but I'm happy with it for now. I've been taking a lot of time lately to re-evaluate my work and decide exactly what I want to do with it. This involves dealing with the business side of art which I don't enjoy that much but is a necessary evil. The real evil is finding the time in between to make with the art. I'll post some new work soon.

The Light Of Day Vol.1 Eps.1

I seem to have accumulated a lot of Illustrations and drawings that never seemed to have amounted to much. Sure the intent behind them was always good, but for various reasons they never seemed to see the light of day. Every once in awhile I'm gonna post some of this stuff.

I'm going to start with a comic project I was once involved with. I hooked up with a group of writers and artists that I had met online. The Group was called Grafika and the intent was to be an independent comic book publisher whose publications focused soley around the work and concepts of the members. One of the projects was an anthology of stories that all revolved around one major plotline. The Anthology was entitled Three Days the Devil Danced.

I teamed up with two writers to produce two of the graphic novel's stories. The first story I worked on was with a writer and comicbook letterer named Jason Arthur. I did all the artwork, layout and design on five pages of story. It is called Blind Faith and here are the first few pages.

New Illo 1.0

This is kind of a new illustration. I started it awhile ago and it has been sitting in my computer for months. Now that the holidays are over I finally had time to sit down and finish it. I was trying some new techniques and approaches on this one and I'm not sure I totally love it. I didn't really start out with a clear path so it became more of a collage exercise than a drawing. I did accomplish some of what I set out to do and learned a thing or two in the process so all was not for waste.

Last Weekend I went out and replaced my old iMac with one of those new fancy 20" monitor 2.0 GHZ Intel Core duo processors...etc...etc...iMacs. It's pretty sweet.

I got a deal on one of those .Mac accounts so this weekend I spent a few hours making a long overdue website with the program iWeb. I've never made a website before, so I think it turned out ok. The program is simple, a 4 year old could use it, but it is also very limited. I'm going to leave it hosted on .Mac for now, then eventually switch it to a different server with a better domain name. I'm sure I'll change it up abit and add stuff too.

NFL Pitch

A few of weeks ago I was approached by a company called 2000 Strong to help them with a pitch for the NFL Network. The idea is that the NFL wants to do lead in animations for each of their teams. I was asked to come up with a couple of concepts and to do a bunch of illustrations that would represent the final look and style of each animation. The coolest part about the gig was I was basically given 'Carte Blanche' and no real art direction. It would have been great to have a little more time on something like this but the quick deadline almost made it that much more interesting. Here's a few of the drawings I did. It was just a pitch, and nothing may come of this, but it would be too cool to see my art come alive.

I recently just opened an online store.

I'm going to be adding more things to it very soon. The store is more or less for fun, another avenue to keep me motivated and working. I'll be offering some of my drawings and designs on a few different products but mostly t-shirts. I'll also be putting some prints and posters up soon aswell. I'm going to try to keep things limited, so once a certain design sells a certain amount I'll be taking it down and adding something else.

Graphic Novels

I love the Graphic Novel. I love reading them and I love the art vs. word world they create, each battling for my attention. I would love to draw and write a Graphic Novel.

I have three seperate stories plotted out and a handful of main and side characters for each. I know how each story goes and I know how they look in my head. My problem is time...and money.

There is alot of time that would be needed to invest in such creative endevours...and without somebody paying me to do so I'm afraid my stories may have to go untold. I mean I could slowly chip away at one, and in a couple years time have it completed, but who would be there to read it?

I don't know...maybe I'll do it anyway. Below would be the second page to a story you will probably never get to read.

I haven't advertised in any sort of Illustration Directory in a long time. I always found that the books where just too bloated with way to many different types and styles of illustration in them. I mean some of these things get to be close to 1000 pages of different artists and if lucky, you could wind up somewhere in the middle, sandwiched between pharmaceutical logos and airbrushed cars.

The people over at The Blackbook seem to be offering an alternative. They're calling it The Blackbook Raw.

The book is, to my understanding, more of a magazine format. It has just over 160 artists in it and is trying to stick to more avant garde work. Supposedly it is printed and started shipping out to Art Directors last week.

I've paid in full, and now I am just waiting to see my copy. Can't wait. We'll see how it does. Oh, and hopefully no airbrushed cars.

An acquaintance of mine asked me if I could do a quick little sketch of Eminem for her son. I think it's his 10th birthday and he must be a big fan of the rapper as most ten year old's seem to be. She said she would pay me in homemade Wontons. Wontons!

This is it, it didn't take too long, mixed media on masonite. 9"X12" I thinks. Did I mention I'm getting paid in Wontons? Life is sweet.

What seems to be many moons ago, I was working on Illustrating the book, "The Fetish Alphabet" for author Susannah Breslin. The premise of the book was that Susannah would choose a fetish for each letter of the alphabet, and then write a wonderful flash fiction for said letter in a way that only she is capable of. She then chose me to illustrate each story.

The Book was never published (yet) and if I recall we reached only the first thirteen letters of the alphabet. Thanks to the good folks at The Sycamore Review, You can all have the pleasure of reading M is for Melissophilia.

I do hope to go back to it one day.

This is the finished piece. I changed the background color 'cause it was driving me up the wall. From there I collaged in the rest using traditional and digital media.

Stage 2

At this stage, the girl has been painted with acrylics and the background composed with paints and PhotoShop. The rest of the colors will be added with PhotoShop. From there I'll collage in the rest of the image. This will bring us to stage 3...the final illustration.

The Start of Something New

This drawing is for a new piece I'm currently working on. This is basically stage 1, being the initial drawing done in pen and ink on illustration board. This is the stage of the drawing where I begin to add paint. I'll try to post each stage as the final painting comes together.
